DEDICATION

Prof Satyendra P Kaushik, the founder Professor and Head of the Department (1990-1997) of Surgical Gastroenterology at the SGPGIMS Lucknow initiated an annual CME program called Surgical Gastroenterology (SGE) Week which was then carried forward by his successors (myself and Prof Rajan Saxena). SGE week became immensely popular amongst the students and every GI Surgeon wanted to be invited to it as faculty.

After moving from SGPGIMS (1989-2021) to MGMCH Jaipur in April 2021, I thought of starting a similar Annual CME program here. The assistance of my former fellow and an able colleague now, Ajay Sharma (HoD Surgical Gastroenterology), and other faculty colleagues, has enabled me to launch the 1st edition of JSF. We plan to make the JSF an annual event and will strive to make it as popular and as useful as the SGE Week.

I would like to dedicate the 1st edition of JSF to SPK (as we all used to call him).

HPB Oncology

Cancers are increasing in incidence in India. Cancers of the hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) tract are difficult to diagnose and treat. The 2nd Jaipur Surgical Festival (JSF) will address issues related to the diagnosis (clinical, imaging, endoscopy, pathology) and management (surgery, liver transplant, adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, biological (targeted) therapy, hormone therapy, HIPEC, TACE, TARE, PRRT) of common HPB cancers e.g. hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), pancreatic and periampullary cancers, and gall bladder cancer (GBC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CC) and uncommon lesions e.g. hepatic adenoma, hemangioma, GB polyp, cystic pancreatic neoplasms (CPN) and neuroendocrine tumors (NET). The CME will also include general topics e.g. imaging, non-surgical management, etc of HPB cancers and miscellaneous topics e.g. surgical anatomy, how to evaluate a metaanalysis, how to write a grant proposal, how to write an article, etc and philosophical issues e.g. what are the important assets in life.

The CME will benefit not only oncologists (surgical, medical and radiation), but also gastroenterologists, hepatologists, general, GI & HPB and transplant surgeons, general physicians and surgeons and radiologists. There will be separate sessions for students and teachers and for practicing doctors. The program will include meet-the-professors over breakfast, several panel discussions and symposia, and moderated video sessions.

The faculty will include top oncologists and surgeons from all over India and some from abroad.

The CME is proposed to be held - both onsite (at MGMCH Jaipur) and online.

Jaipur Surgical Gurukul (JSG)

We at the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Hospital (MGMCH), Jaipur are planning to launch a Jaipur Surgical Gurukul (JSG) for MCh/DNB-SS (SGE/HPB Surg) students (III year) sometime around March April 2023.

You will arrive in Jaipur on a Saturday - stay through the week - and leave Jaipur on the next Sunday.

You will participate in academic sessions, present cases, attend ward rounds, observe OT, discuss operations, etc. (and have some free time to see the city!).

The Gurukul is FREE for the students i.e. there will be NO registration fee but you have to pay for your boarding and lodging - we will provide help for making these arrangements.

In order to avail of the FREE registration, you have to prepare and send

  • a real-life case summary (including history, examination, investigation reports, images, operative findings, operative procedure, postoperative complications, biopsy report, etc)
  • a topic for presentation in the form a seminar (with review of recent literature)
  • an operative procedure (including indications, contraindications, procedure, complications, results, etc)

Priority will be given to those students who could not pass the MCh/DNB-SS practical (clinical) exam in an earlier attempt.

If you would like to attend, please email me at vkkapoor.india@gmail.com with a YES JSG and indicate a week in January, February or March 2023 which will suit you best - we will then decide the dates.
